A while back a good friend and fellow Republican asked me "Why do Republicans eat their own?"

This has caused me to pause and think on this several times in the months following that conversation.

So, why do Republicans eat their own? Or in other words, why are the most vicious attacks on conservative politicians coming from those who claim to be Republicans?

In this current election cycle, we only have one local race - that of Spencer County Clerk. Again, we only have one Republican in the race. So why is it that Lynn Hesselbrock being attacked by members of her own party?

If one looks at the history of Spencer County, one would find the history of politics is tied not only to the Democratic party but also tied to those few local names. One of those names is Nation and if the long time residents of Spencer County don't count themselves a Nation, then they probably married into the family.

So are those Republicans attacking Lynn trying to 'make points' with the long-time locals by seemingly switching sides to curry favor with the Nations of the county? Why else would she be getting all the nastiness directed at her?

There is a nasty website out there that targets those in our county trying to make a difference. I won't glorify it by posting a link but will tell you that they claim to be a "Watchdog." What the site contains are almost daily attacks on Lynn (calling her an Airhead), Bill Karrer (whose nickname I can't use because I don't use that language), and Buddy Stump (calling him Barney Stump). While most of the so called information is suspect, there are bits here and there that directly point to someone with close ties to our Spencer County GOP feeding information to the website creators.

I don't know who this person or persons may be but I can tell you they should be ashamed. It has been a long, hard battle to get any local Republicans elected and these three mentioned have worked tirelessly and backed candidates of the local Republican Party unconditionally.

So to those of you trying to score brownie points with the Nations of the county, do you think any Nation or Democrat will ever back you if you try to run for office?

You ask why Republicans question their own? It's simple, we expect more of a Republican than a Democrat. The goal of the Democrats is to get as many as possible on government support and there by getting a guaranteed voting base. The Republicans, OTOH, prefer everyone to control their own welfare and destiny.

If a Republican candidate or person already in office screws up we want reasons why and correction of their mistakes. Democrats do not require this of their office holders. At this point in time Lynn seems to be doing a good job but I can't say the same for Bill or Buddy. They seem to have let the office they hold go to their head and they seem to consider themselves above reproach. I am afraid Buddy's latest gestapo attack against Tragester will cost the county and Buddy dearly in money and respectability.

What you have to remember when your elected is you serve the public and a few of our elected Republican office holders have forgotten that and become somewhat narcissistic in their actions. They were voted in and they will be voted out.

BTW, the site you mention is http://spencercowatchdog.com/ and it is Lawrence Trageser's site and he is diligent in finding the truth but not so diligent in just presenting the truth. He likes to make verbally abusive statements and jerk politicians chain. I prefer a different approach than Lawrence does and have discussed that with him. He is what he is and it's best for a politician to ignore the way he says things while reading what he says.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Watch everyone and everything and ignore nothing.

I do believe Buddy fell into his trap and Buddy may pay dearly along with others in power. Time will tell and the County may pay for this Gestapo reaction.

On the lighter but scarier side of the govt....

A lesson in irony
US Dept. of Agriculture Vs. the US Dept. of the Interior

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever this year to over 47 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us, "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because
"The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Thus ends today's lesson in irony (and government logic).

I agree with Carl Darnell. Something happens to people when they get elected, maybe its the power trip. Take our Judge Exec., the first time I lost respect for him was when he tried to use personal information against magistrate Jerry Davis, that backfired big time. He seems to put himself above us others. Then the stupid notion that County employee spouses need County ID's. Bill, first we didn't elect your wife (who I am sure is a lovely lady) for anything. If you feel the need for people to know who she is put a piece of ply wood on your vehicle and write her name one it, really where do you expect her to wear the ID, the grocery store? Then there is the Radio tower and of course he is above the laws intended for the rest of us, There are other issues but you get the point.
Our Sheriff, I cannot figure out, other than a Big Ego Trip. Why does he think he needs so many deputies and now he is getting 2 new vehicles. They both are going to be one termers.
As for L. Hasselbrock, she just a puppet for Bill Karrer. Hope she learns a lot when she attends the customer service training in July.

The dinner was a great success. Mary Ann & I had a great time at the Lincoln Day Dinner. From our perspective everyone had a great time.

Thank you Steve, Karen and all those who organized and conducted this event.
